A stop motion animator for 20 years, Tim Allen was a key animator on Wes Anderson’s Oscar nominated film Isle of Dogs. His other credits includes Fantastic Mr Fox & Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride & Frankenweenie. As well as animating on Oscar winning Peter & the Wolf & Oscar nominated My Life as a Zucchini, he’s served many years of TV series work including Fireman Sam, Postman Pat plus Shaun the Sheep & Creature Comforts USA for Aardman Animations. Tim was Animation Supervisor on The Magic Piano and also the stop motion Club Penguin specials for Disney.

Peter is a Lead Animator at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) Singapore. ILM is a Visual Effects company with multiple studios across the globe. Peter first joined the company in Dec 2006 and his first project was the TV series Star Wars, The Clone Wars. He then joined the film division in 2009 and worked on Rango and has since worked on multiple feature films such as Transformers, Avengers, Pacific Rim and many more. He is currently working on the next installment of the Jurassic World movies.
My time spent in the Animation profession has been very brief. However it was aligned to my larger journey of understanding the Indian essence in terms of thought and content. In this session I would like to share aspects of this brief journey – the struggle, the training, the personalities encountered, the roadblocks faced and the potential ways forward. The presentation will be in the form of an informal chat with accompanying visuals/videos ending with question-answer interaction.

To call him an animator, would be a gross understatement of his abilities. He can wear other hats, just as proficiently, like that of an architect, a cartoonist and many others. He can hold his own just as well with experts of archeology, history, mythology, folk art and one cannot forget educationist. His explorations are steeped in Indian tradition and yet manage to be refreshingly contemporary. On this journey of personal growth, he has been blessed with many gurus like B. V. Doshi, Mario Miranda, Ram Mohan, Kaj Pindal, Derek Lamb, Walter Spink, and others, each leading lights in their own fields. Always a student and a great teacher, he has groomed many of the country’s animators and inspired many others.

Manish Jhaveri is an award-winning creative director from Advertising since 1992. He has been associated with the witty Amul topicals since 1994 and is by far the longest serving writer of these cheeky topical ads. Manish also consults for a couple of other agencies and works directly with a number of clients. Humour and Manish share an abiding relationship. He has been associated with many film award shows including IIFA and has conceptualised and written more than 300 corporate shows in collaboration with Jaaved Jaaferi. Manish also works with a number of event production companies as a scriptwriter. Manish considers the Amul campaign to be his crowning glory. His association with Rahul da Cunha and Jayant Rane has delivered more than 2000 topicals over the last 26 years and created many ‘smile’stones along the way. Jayant Rane is a quiet, almost shy magician (a graduate of JJ School of Art) whose Amul cartoons have lit up many a dark day. He has been the sole cartoonist for Amul for almost 35 years. With his deft strokes and flashes of colour he can make everyone from the Father of the Nation to Mother Teresa look like the Amul baby (‘moppet’ as we call her). Today, hundreds of brands want to ride on topicality and humour to get their message across. In this sea of topicality, it is Jayant’s incredible art that gives the Amul slices of wit their edge. No one draws quite like him. And every drawing is painstakingly done by hand. No fancy gizmos or apps. He truly is one of the biggest ‘draws’ for Amul.
Rahul daCunha has balanced two careers for the last 34 years – advertising and theatre. His advertising career has encompassed stints with Fulcrum, Lintas Lowe, Contract and DaCunha Communications. He has been on creative teams that have created memorable campaigns for Shoppers Stop, Bajaj and Park Avenue among others. For the last 26 years he has partnered with Manish Jhaveri and Jayant Rane in creating ads for the iconic Amul topical campaign. In theatre, his plays include Class of 84, Pune Highway, I’m not Bajirao, and his latest, India’s first original stage musical, #SingIndiaSing which he co-wrote with Bugs Bhargava Krishna. He is a co-founder with Rajit Kapur and Shernaz Patel, of the Rage Theatre Company.[/expand]
Where’s the story in games? I don’t see a story in Candy Crush or Temple Run or Poker game so why should I bother about the narrative for a video game? Rajat will discuss why telling stories in video games is important from a UX perspective as this centers around the story of the players. Stories in games give a player choices, environments and circumstances where their actions impact the outcome. Games make superheros out of players as they engage and connect at different levels. That’s why an understanding of art and game design is crucial as Game Designers are in effect playing with human psychology.
