An alumnus of Sir JJ School of Arts Mumbai (Gold Medalist) and FTII Pune, Soumitra has been writing, directing and producing a wide range of animation and live-action projects in feature films, TV serials, documentaries and short experimental genres. His work has been showcased at various prestigious international film festivals and has received numerous awards.

His most famous works include children’s feature films Jajantaram Mamantaram and Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa (screenplay) and animated TV Serials Karadi Tales and Bandbudh Aur Budbak. His documentary on Afghanistan Khoob Asti Afghanistan? received international acclaim and his recent live-action feature film Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai? released all over India in 2019 and is currently streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime. He was the Animation Producer of Bombay Rose and VFX/Animation Supervisor of Ghode Ko Jalebi Khilane Le Ja Riya Hoon.

He is currently working on Kabuliwala – an animated adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s classic short story.

Soumitra has written and designed numerous books for children and has had three photography exhibitions. He is the Founder-Chairman of Paperboat Design Studios and divides his professional time between Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Toronto.

He is an animation industry veteran with 25 years of experience working with prestigious international companies across multiple extensions such as gaming, comics, commercials and film. He’s served as an overseas animation supervisor for Disney, Dreamworks and Nickelodeon, worked as an art director on Direct to Home features for Mattel, created and developed Little Krishna for Nick India, international commercials such as Fanta for Psyop and also gaming properties such as Bravely default and casual gaming giants like Zynga.

International clients and domestic startups apart, Vikram enjoys building art communities and teaching the art of animation and design thinking and is affiliated with prestigious organizations in India and overseas.

Born in Valencia, Spain in 1981, ever since he can remember he was drawn to comics, animation and later video games and computer graphics. He studied Fine Arts with a specialization in animation and painting and on graduating, worked in a few small TV animation / advertising companies in the Czech Republic and Spain, where, as he says, “I was doing a bit of everything”. He went on to work at Ilion Animation as a matte painter and after a few years, moved to London, where he worked on TV animation (The Amazing World of Gumball), Commercials (The Mill), and is currently working as Senior Generalist at Industrial Light and Magic.

Among the many high profile projects he has been a part of are:

Bird Box – Jungle
Avengers : Endgame – Final Battle Environments
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – Pasaana & Ajan Kloss Environments.

Presenting Maroto El ‘Bambino Monkey’

Talking about his interesting career journey as he shared tips on character design and his creation process; and in a rare live demo, watch him design a character from scratch using an impromptu brief from the audience –  “A young hippo wrestler with split personality of a shy girl“. And this is what he did!!!

 Maroto aka Bambinomonkey, is a Spanish illustrator and character designer working in the animation field for 16 years. He mostly works in the advertisement space and for the VFX industry. His style is simple and strongly influenced by cartoons and he loves cats. He does however think that sleepers are the definitive shoes.

Girgit Studios is one of India’s leading Animation Design Studios founded in 2011 by NID Alumni – Swarup Deb, Avinash Medhe and Anuj Kumar, with the vision to emerge as a studio applying design thinking in content development and mastering the art of storytelling through the medium of animation to reach an audience beyond just kids. Over the years Girgits continue to gather diverse experiences working with some of the finest brands and professionals. They transcend boundaries of medium be it 2D, 3D, Stopmotion animation or mix media. Girgit Studios provide script to screen animation services and Design Consultancy for TV, Cinema or Digital platforms for Educational, Promotional and Entertainment purposes of its clients. 

Their IP and commissioned short films have been awarded and recognized and loved by audiences and festivals in India as well internationally.

Founders – Anuj, Avinash and Swarup were batchmates at the National Institute of Design while pursuing their PG. They co-founded Girgit Studios, an Animation Film Design studio based in Pune, India. The trio brings in the right blend of Design thinking, Visual storytelling and Execution finesse. They have crafted and delivered over 125 animation projects ranging from TVCs, Promo films, PSAs, explainers, Music Videos, short films and more, and gathered international acclaim for their work. Their short film 09:09F was selected as the best film in the Professional Short Films category by the audience at Anifest India 2019.

ANUJ is an artist at heart and scientist at brain. This enables him to effortlessly juggle art and technology and create spectacular visual experiences. He experiments with various techniques of animation and is in love with motion in art. Don’t ever leave your stuff near him or else, you may find them alive and moving! SWARUP, an engineer turned designer is a master of all trades. He intuitively puts together a client’s fragmented brief and initial ideas of his creative team, to build that essential bridge between the two. He makes sure that all the gears of the entire Girgit machinery are well oiled and creatively engaged. AVINASH is a storyteller, a poet, web worm and a film buff. He was born with a filmy spoon. He breathes cinema. While all others just watch a film, his brain defragments it into camera angles, shot taking, background score, visual narrative and so on.
