An alumnus of Sir JJ School of Arts Mumbai (Gold Medalist) and FTII Pune, Soumitra has been writing, directing and producing a wide range of animation and live-action projects in feature films, TV serials, documentaries and short experimental genres. His work has been showcased at various prestigious international film festivals and has received numerous awards.

His most famous works include children’s feature films Jajantaram Mamantaram and Goopi Gawaiyaa Bagha Bajaiyaa (screenplay) and animated TV Serials Karadi Tales and Bandbudh Aur Budbak. His documentary on Afghanistan Khoob Asti Afghanistan? received international acclaim and his recent live-action feature film Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai? released all over India in 2019 and is currently streaming on Netflix and Amazon Prime. He was the Animation Producer of Bombay Rose and VFX/Animation Supervisor of Ghode Ko Jalebi Khilane Le Ja Riya Hoon.

He is currently working on Kabuliwala – an animated adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s classic short story.

Soumitra has written and designed numerous books for children and has had three photography exhibitions. He is the Founder-Chairman of Paperboat Design Studios and divides his professional time between Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Toronto.
